The process of Indigo & Kind is thoughtful, straightforward, and artistic. The craft of our makers has been passed down from their ancestors who have practiced textile art for generations in a village outside Jaipur, India. Each part of the process is deeply embedded in culture.
Printing no more than fifty pieces of each design at a time is proof that at Indigo & Kind, it’s quality that is of paramount importance. We take the utmost care in choosing the right fabric based on the purity of materials used. Made from a blend of cotton and silk, the textiles have qualities of softness, durability, and ability to hold vivid pigment.
Block Carving is done by hand on natural wood. Depending on the design, it sometimes takes multiple blocks to complete the pattern.
Using natural and non-toxic materials, dyes are most often mixed in deep wells and are mixed several times until the most precise color is achieved. After the dye dries to perfection, printing is done using hand carved wooden blocks. Through great practice, craftspeople are able to eyeball designs and produce accurate results. Usually, textiles are printed by repetitively using the same block or set of blocks. Once the fabric is printed, drying is done out on the fields in the bright sunshine. The sun does the work of naturally fading and setting the rich colors of the dye.
Once the fabric is dry, it is hand-stitched around the edges by a group of women working collaboratively out of their own homes. This is the finishing touch that makes the art more durable and ready to wear.
